Product Description

The four texts of the Intercultural Communicative Language Teaching and TCSOL are based on the lectures given by Professor Byram at the “Intercultural Communicative Language Teaching and International Chinese Language Education Senior Workshop” held by the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching in summer 2016. The book focuses on the aims of language teaching which are often treated with low priority: the humanistic and educational aims which develop learners’ critical understanding of self and one’s own society and the societies of others and their way of life or culture. The book explains the fundamental concepts involved – for example the concepts of ‘culture’, of ‘competence’ and ‘social identity’ – and explains how these should be used as a basis for creating a systematic and theoretically well-founded approach to including the cultural dimension in language teaching. Examples are used to illustrate this argument, drawn from teaching in several countries and teaching both English and other languages, with suggestions as to how this approach could be used in the field of TCSOL. A lot of teachers and researchers are attracted by Michael Byram’s fame and communicate with him about TCSOL. This book is produced in a Chinese-English bilingual format in order to provide helpful reading experience for international Chinese language teachers and second language teaching researchers.
