From December 7th to 9th 2017, a four-member delegation of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) visited Hungary and held further discussions with the Kossuth Publishing Corporation (Kossuth), a famous Hungarian publisher, reaching cooperative intentions on co-establishing a China-Theme Editorial Department and executing several publishing projects of translated works in the country.

Kossuth is a renowned publishing group in Hungary with five publishing houses, seven bookstores and one online bookstore. It publishes 350 titles annually and has already published more than 50 China-theme books, including works of Mo Yan and some other Chinese writers. During the Beijing International Book Fair held in August 2017, Kossuth responded actively to FLTRP’s proposal of co-establishing a China-Theme Editorial Department in Hungary. Through this visit, both parties further concretized the cooperation mode and selection of the department head, and preliminarily confirmed the first co-publishing projects. Opening ceremony of the China-Theme Editorial Department is scheduled in April 2018 during the Budapest International Book Festival. Following Bulgaria and Poland, Hungary would soon become the third location for an FLTRP China-Theme Editorial Department in Central and Eastern Europe.

The delegation raised the idea of setting up China-theme bookshelves when visiting three of the Kossuth bookstores. They also met with Ms. Gu Lan, editor of the Hungarian version of Journey to the West, Ms. Zombory Klára, translator of Mo Yan’s Frog and The Republic of Wine, and other senior editors and sinologists.

Members in the delegation include Ms. Guo Xiaojing, Deputy Director of Hungarian Research Center at the Beijing Foreign Studies University, Ms. Hou Hui, Director of the International Division of FLTRP, Ms. Zou Xiaobai, Deputy General Manager of the Belt and Road Language Service Center, and Ms. Zhang Jiaqi, Coordinator of Central and Eastern Europe Project.
